Since their mother died and their father abandoned them, Carlie and Pete have survived on Gramps' veterans cheques. However, Carlie needs more money to support her younger brother. Unable to find a job, she rents rooms to war veterans and forms an unlikely new family. Encouraged by the veterans, Carlie enters a song contest, which sets her on the road to discovering her voice in Americana music.
